Antique German Belsnickle Santa Claus Paper Mache Christmas Ornament Figure

  

Belsnickles Paper Mache Santa Claus. This one is 7 inches tall from top of the hat to bottom of round base.

They are made in Germany between 1870 and World War 1. They are hollow cast in two molds and covered with thin layer of plaster.

This was was used to hand on the Christmas Tree or decoration Fire Place Mantel but this one has cord so You hand from Your Christmas Tree. Most are shown holding a sprig of greenery inserted in there right hand.

There is a hold but greenery is missing. Both hands show wear and clothes show wear also. Belsnickle is German word for Santa Claus. Nicholas and handed out goodies and switches. There are different colors and shapes.

Belsnickles are getting harder and harder to find and prices are high depending on condition, molding, and style. This one does have some wear and is list in Christmas Ornaments, Lights & Decorations by George Johnson and this book is 1990 and prices back then were high so now they would be a lot higher then back then and back then they ran from 500.00 to 800.00.
