A RARE, large and beautiful church antique - 1700s wooden statue depicting St Nicholas of Myra (also known as Nicholas of Bari) featuring a mitre (bishop's hat), vestments, crosier (bishop's staff) and three extended fingers on the right hand meaning Holy Trinity. His legendary habit of secret gift-giving gave rise to the traditional model of Santa Claus. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, children, brewers, pawnbrokers and students. The sculpture comes from a monastery in France and dates back to the mid-1700s. Please contact me for an additional. In good condition with no damage besides age-related wear. Crosier is a later replacement.
